BUZZING WITH QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS THE WHITE FILM ON MY 100% BEESWAX CANDLE?

Bloom! The white film on your 100% pure USA beeswax candle is naturally occurring only in pure beeswax candles and is called bloom. This happens often with a change in temperature and can be easily removed (if desired) with a lint free cloth or wiping it with your fingers. Bloom is a great indicator that your Beeswax is 100% pure and not cut with other waxes.

WHY IS THE FLAME BIG ON MY CANDLE?

The candle wick needs to be trimmed each time before the candle is lit. This will prevent a large flame or potential mushrooming or carbon build up on the wick. If a large flame occurs, extinguish the flame by dipping the wick into the melt pool, pulling it back out and waiting til it cools. Once cooled, trim the wick to 1/4 inch and relight.

WHY IS THERE WAX ON THE WICK?

At Bee American Candle Co, we hand craft all of our candles. Each wick is primed, or dipped, in beeswax before it is used in the candle. Priming the wick makes lighting the wick much easier. We recommend dipping the wick of the candle to extinguish it - blowing out the candle can cause drips and smoke - dipping it in the melt pool will prime it for the next time.

WHERE DOES YOUR BEESWAX COME FROM?

We work with a local apiary out of Morganton, North Carolina that provides our 100% pure USA beeswax. We try to use the most local products to help the economy and support our local apiaries.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE COLORS OF THE CANDLES?

Our 100% pure USA beeswax candles have an array of yellow hues based on batch of wax being used. Beeswax comes in all different shades of yellow based on the area and flowers the bees pollinated. Each of our 100% pure USA beeswax are hand crafted and unique.

WHAT IS BAYBERRY?

Bayberry wax is a rare wax harvested from the berries of the wax myrtle tree. It is a delicate and brittle wax that has a subtle balsam, earthy smell. Our bayberry wax is refined in the USA and is globally sourced. The berries are collected and boiled, the waxy film that cover the berries is collected. It takes approximately 5 pounds to make one pound of wax - that’s a lot of berries!
Back in the colonial times, before the time of electricity, the colonist would use candles made from animal fat. The animal fat, tallow, was easily available, easy to render, and easy to make candles. The down side was the home smelled of burgers when the tallow candles were lit.
On special occasions, such as Christmas and New Years, the colonists would celebrate by burning pleasantly smelling candles like Bayberry and Beeswax.
The bayberry wax was typically mixed with beeswax and dipped by hand to make long lasting, harder tapers. Our one of a kind tea lights are made with 100% pure bayberry wax.
The tradition of burning Bayberry candles still continues to this day.
The tradition goes: “A bayberry candle burned to the socket brings food to the larder and gold to the pocket.”
